48th edition - Trento (Italy) 28th April - 6th May 2000

At the 48th edition of the International Film Festival "Citta' di Trento", mountains from the peaks to the foothills

Mountains as a place of culture, exploration, sport and adventure, to enjoy on the wide-screen, to read through, to listen to and to experience, to understand, dream of and defend. Producers, directors, writers, photographers, ethnographers, anthropologists, mountaineers, explorers, travellers from all over the world will lead the audience to the most remote corners of the earth with their experiences, during ten days of images, stories and anecdotes of breathtaking physical and cultural adventures situated in the mountain peaks. It will happen at the International Film Festival of Mountains, Exploration and Adventure "Citta di Trento", which since 1952 has been bringing on the scene the mountains of the world and this year will take place in the heart of the Dolomites, Trento (Italy), from 28th April to 6th May.

Film Festival, Mountain Book Festival, exhibitions, round tables, meetings

This year's edition will literally be a high-altitude event. In fact, besides the historical international Film Festival (now at its 48th edition), the 14th International Mountain Book Festival (which exhibits the latest 1999/2000 publications), the 5th International Antique Mountain Book Exhibition and the ITAS Mountain Book Prize, all debates, meetings and round tables will revolve mainly around the fourteen eight thousand peaks and their protagonists.

International Mountain Film Competition (30th April - 6th May)

Mountain Films, mountaineering films, exploration films, films of sports and sport adventure in the mountains will compete in the documentary and fiction sections, respectively for the Gran Premio "Citt? di Trento" Gold Gentian and the Premio "Citta di Bolzano" Gold Gentian.

From the mountains of Africa to the land of the Mayas, from the infinite plains of the Arctic to the soaring peaks of the Himalayas, from the arid deserts of Australia to the rose-tipped Dolomites and golden granite of the Alps, the Festival will feature on the wide-screen a week of action, adventure, exploration and contemplation of the mountains of the world, expressing their symbolic spirit as well as their human, historical, social and environmental aspects.

On the rope with Reinhold Messner and the great protagonists of the 8000m peaks (3rd, 4th, 5th May)

The "eight thousand peaks" will embody the ideal rope for the entire Festival. On this rope the audience will be guided through the Festival during the film retrospectives, the mountaineering meetings and debates, book signings and book fairs, and through the architectural tours of the city of Trento. The Eight thousand peaks will reach the "Top of the World" on Friday 5th May, at the Centro Culturale Santa Chiara Auditorium, with an evening led by Reinhold Messner, the first man ever to climb Everest without oxygen and to conquer every eight thousand peak on the planet, and the participation of the great protagonists of the giants of the earth.

MONTAGNALIBRI - 14th International Mountain Book Festival  (28th April - 7th May)

The Festival will be officially opened by the 14th International Mountain Book Festival - MONTAGNALIBRI, which will exhibit the latest 1999/2000 publications. Mountain guides, mountain literature, biographies and autobiographies, image books, books of adventures and expeditions, issues on the history of mountaineering and mountaineers, studies on the flora and fauna, on mountain art and architecture, ethnography and more will display the kaleidoscopic world of mountains. Last year Montagnalibri exhibited 244 publishers from 15 European and non-European countries. A paper of mountain to be climbed, explored and discovered.

Montagnalibri will organize roundtables with writers, literary debates, book signings and the staging of theme-orientated exhibitions, amongst which, one dedicated to the fourteen "eight thousand peaks".

5th International Antique Mountain Book Exhibition (28th - 30th April)

Collectors and lovers of antique books, prints and maps cannot miss the traditional rendezvous with mountain "antiques" organized in conjunction with MONTAGNALIBRI. The exhibition-market, which is the only one in Italy and the most important in Europe, will bring together the most renowned antiques dealers in this particular field.

Montagnalibri and the Bookfair will be held in the Piazza Fiera, in downtown Trento.

With homage to the cultural tradition

A rich and eventful program will take place at the 48th edition of the International Film Festival of Mountains, Exploration and Adventure "Citta di Trento", founded in 1952 by the City of Trento and the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) and supported since 1998 also by the City of Bolzano.
